SALTWATER FLY FISHING DESTINATIONS

Saltwater fly fishing is a unique experience. If you ask any passionate fisherman what their favorite type of fish to catch on the fly is, the obvious answer will be saltwater species. There’s an unmatched thrill in fishing for these species that freshwater varieties simply can’t match. If you’re looking for an unforgettable tarpon or permit catch, check out some of these top-rated saltwater fly fishing locations.

Venice, Louisiana

Often associated with its cajun cuisine, duck hunting and festivities of Mardi Gras, Louisiana is not to be overlooked as a destination for fly fishing. Adored by anglers from around the world, its nickname ‘The Redfish Capital’ is well-deserved; during the spring and summer months vast schools of redfish bulls can be seen gathering in the waters near the coast. Expect to catch at least 20 fish on a good day – if you’re lucky you may even snag one 40 pounder or larger! For an unassuming yet rewarding getaway that won’t drain your wallet, look no further than this southernmost stretch of New Orleans.

Belize

Including Belize on a list of the best saltwater fly fishing destinations is a must. This Caribbean nation, situated near the northeast coast of Central America, has been a dream trip for anglers all over. Not only is Belize small but it also boasts an abundance of different saltwater fish species as well as some top-notch fly fishing lodges. In Belize you’ll find plenty of chances to snag tarpon, permit or bonefish and it doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or new to the sport. Additionally, flights and hotel accommodations are surprisingly affordable so that this adventure can become a reality.

Andros Island, Bahamas

Andros Island, known as the Bonefish Capital of the World, is a fisher’s paradise. Located in the northeastern corner of the Bahamas, it is the largest island in the archipelago and offers an immersive fly fishing experience with guides ready to help visitors get a trophy bonefish. However, if you’re looking for an alternative to expensive lodges, don’t worry – a DIY trip is completely doable with just some planning and research. Your adventure will be accompanied by amazing vistas and amazing food; what more could you want?

Punta Allen, Mexico

If your endgame is a Grand Slam, head to Punta Allen in Mexico. Ascension Bay’s saltwater flats are replete with bonefish and permit, as well as ample tarpon and snook. It’s roughly one hundred miles south of Cancún and provides wonderful fly fishing conditions all the year round, though most rewarding times to go are in early spring. Punta Allen being a fisher village, finding a knowledgeable guide for half- or full-day trips is easy – just remember to tip generously!

Sarasota Bay, Florida

SALTWATER FLY FISHING DESTINATIONS

Fishing in the Sunshine State is world-renowned. On the beaches of the Gulf Coast, near Sarasota Bay, you will find an abundance of saltwater fishing species–jacks, redfish, snook and tarpon can all be found there. The one downside is that this area is quite commercialized. Locating a spot without a resort attached might test your skills, meaning a boat is needed for getting to those special areas where the fishing really picks up. Once you have acquired your vessel, you may wish to hire an experienced guide for extra tips and insider knowledge. Rest assured that there are terrific guides available to show anglers around this remarkable part of Florida’s coast.

Cayo Largo, Cuba

SALTWATER FLY FISHING DESTINATIONS

Fly fishing in Cuba has been on my bucket list for a while, and although it is still there, I have lived vicariously through friends who have visited. They were often full of tales of the extensive bonefish population in Cayo Largo. For close to sixty years, it was almost impossible for an American to visit this Caribbean nation. But now, given that much of the travel restrictions have been lifted, you can fly from Miami directly to Cuba and get to experience its culture, history and breath-taking fly fishing. Bonefish in Cuba are much larger than those you find in Belize or Florida – something that can definitely make the entire trip worthwhile! Despite pesky paperwork and finding a reliable guide, no one can deny the sheer beauty of Cuban bones.

Among the greatest things about fly fishing are the places you’ll visit. It’s a lifestyle unlike any other because of the views, the people, the food, the culture, and the community that surround fly fishing. The trip to one of these places will be well worth it if you have a bucket list of places where you can catch big saltwater fish on the fly.
